A Aérospatiale (depois Eurocopter, depois Airbus Helicopters) lançou o AS350 Écureuil ('Esquilo' em francês) em 1975 como sucessor do clássico SA 318 Alouette II. Primeiro voo em junho de 1974, certificação em outubro de 1977. AS350 B (motor LTS101) e B1 (Arriel 1B) precederam o B2 (1989, Arriel 1D1), versão definitiva utility. Família AS350 totaliza mais de 6.000 unidades produzidas. No Brasil entrou em 1978 via Helibras.
Airbus encerrou produção do AS350 B2 em 2007, substituído pelo AS350 B3 (Arriel 2B, melhor hot/high) na linha de Marignane e Itajubá. Em 2014 a marca passou de Eurocopter para Airbus Helicopters e o AS350 B3 foi rebranded como H125, que continua em produção em 2024 com 5.000+ unidades cumulativas. Frota AS350 B2 ativa global ainda supera 1.500 unidades, com suporte Airbus garantido e MROs no Brasil (Helibras, Líder, Aerocon).

O AS350 B2 é o helicóptero policial padrão no Brasil, operado pelas Polícias Militares de SP (Águia), RJ, MG (BOA), PR, RS, BA, GO, e várias outras, além da Polícia Federal e Força Aérea. Combinação de cabine 6 PAX (4 operadores + 2 pilotos), payload 1.030 kg, performance hot/high (hover OGE 6.700 ft) e suporte Helibras local viabilizam frota nacional grande. Algumas unidades migrando para H125 (B3e) ou H135 nos últimos anos.
O AS350 tem cabine modular sem cloisons fixas, bancos traseiros podem ser removidos/reconfigurados em 15 minutos para configurações: 6 PAX corporate, 4 PAX + maca EMS, 2 PAX + carga utility, hoist/winch externo (busca-e-resgate), sling-load (carga externa). Versatilidade rara em helicópteros desta categoria, concorrentes como Bell 407 são mais rígidos. Permite operadores manterem 1 aircraft cobrindo múltiplas missões durante a semana.
O AS350 B2 é certificado VFR single-engine apenas. Para missões offshore Petrobras e operações IFR comerciais, operadores precisam de twin-engine certificado IFR como AW139, S-76, H145 ou H160. AS350 B2 fica restrito a operações VFR onshore, mas isso cobre 80% das missões civis (ENG, polícia, EMS rural, executivo, turismo). Sucessor B3 também single-engine; AS355 (Twin Squirrel) é a versão twin da família.
Eurocopter sempre comercializou o AS350 globalmente como 'Écureuil' (esquilo em francês), referência ao perfil ágil e ao formato da fuselagem que lembra um esquilo. Helibras adotou diretamente a tradução 'Esquilo' como nome de mercado no Brasil desde os primeiros AS350 B em 1978. Apelido virou cultural, Forças Armadas, polícias e operadores civis chamam universalmente de 'Esquilo' (ex: 'Esquilão' para AS355 twin, 'Esquilo B3' para AS350 B3).
